A unique look for Sala's new sports hall

Only a year after the construction started, the new 'Lärkan' sports hall in Sala (Sweden) opened its doors. And it is, to say the least, unique in its design. The city's new sports hall will not only bring joy to athletes, but also offer a beautiful feature of the city's architecture with its artistic facade with beautiful lighting effects.

Sala, a small town just north of Stockholm in Sweden, has a very active community with many sports clubs, creating a great need for a new sports hall. Unlike many other gyms, it is built with sustainable design elements and art in focus, creating a pleasant and stylish environment for everyone's eyes.

Selecting the right building materials

Right from the start, the new sports hall in Sala was a true collaboration project, where all parties involved jointly formed the project. Therefore, when deciding on the materials to be used in the new building, they did so in a unified group. There were a lot of factors to take into account. For example, the facade should be robust and durable - and at the same time easy and cost efficient to install. Eventually, they opted for Rockpanel Stones façade cladding in two colours: Mineral Rust and Basalt Iron.

The municipality of Sala has an art policy which means 1% of the total building costs of every new or renovated building is dedicated to art. Anne-Charlotte Broman, project manager at Sala Municipality, tells: “For Lärkan, we chose to have an artist creating a pattern to decorate the façade, that was carved into the facade panels. We put luminaires in the facade so that they shine behind the artwork, making it a beautiful aesthetic element to the surrounding environment.”
